Substantial Internet Outage Affects Dozens Sites and Mobile Apps

A large-scale web outage has affected many sites and apps around the world, as users noting troubles connecting to the web due to difficulties at Amazon’s online infrastructure platform.

The disrupted platforms comprise the social media app Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, Signal, and Duolingo, as well as multiple Amazon-owned platforms including its primary shopping platform and the Ring home security firm.

In the UK, Lloyds bank was impacted in addition to its subsidiaries Halifax and the Scottish bank, while there were also reports of difficulties accessing the HM Revenue and Customs website on the start of the week. Also in the UK, several Ring customers took to social media to report their security devices were failing.

In the UK alone, notifications of issues on individual applications reached the thousands for each app.

The company stated that the outage started in the Atlantic coast of the America at the cloud division, a division that provides crucial web framework for many businesses, who rent out space on AWS infrastructure. The cloud platform is the biggest global web hosting system.

Just after midnight (PDT) in the US (8 in the morning BST), officials reported “increased failure rates and slowdowns” for AWS services in a area on the Atlantic seaboard of the United States. The ripple effect was seen to affect platforms worldwide, with the problem monitoring service showing issues with the corresponding services in various regions.

The monitoring service Thousand Eyes, a service that reports on online failures, also reported a surge in outages on the start of the week, and numerous instances found in the state of Virginia, the location of the eastern US data center where officials confirmed the issues began.
